Horse age is measured in game days

Horse age in Horses of Hoofprint Bay is measured in in-game days, or turns, rather than months or years. Foals grow up, and horses eventually retire; retired horses are effectively out of the game.

02

Pregnancy, foals and growing up

Pregnancy lasts eight game days, and foals take four game days to become yearlings. These are deliberately simplified lifecycle timings, so use the game's day count when planning for a birth or following a foal's growth. Real-world horse ages are not a useful conversion for the displayed number.

Keep the yearling stage separate from reaching adulthood. All Grown Up is the achievement for having a foal grow into an adult. If that is your goal, follow the horse through its growth rather than treating becoming a yearling as the finish.

03

Lifespan and what retirement means

Horses have an approximate lifespan of 190 in-game days. Use that as a broad planning guide when thinking about your herd's future, rather than scheduling every horse's retirement for that exact age.

Once a horse retires, it is effectively out of the game. Try to finish the training, competition or breeding goals that matter to you while the horse is still active. Leave room in your plans for other horses to take over as your yard develops.

Neglect can also cause a horse to leave: animal welfare can take neglected horses away. Confiscated horses are effectively out of the game too. Keep care part of your routine as horses age, rather than treating their eventual retirement as a reason to neglect them.

The retirement achievements have different requirements. A Whole Life requires a horse you bred to retire at your yard, while A Forever Home requires a horse to move to the retirement farm. Plan around the outcome you want instead of assuming either retirement objective automatically satisfies the other.

Plan for growth and retirement

  1. Read the displayed age as a count of game days, so you understand the horse's age without converting it into months or years.
  2. Take a nursing mare for a walk in the arena or forest to have her foal come along while you spend time with the pair.
  3. Raise a foal through to adulthood if you want All Grown Up, which rewards having a foal become an adult.
  4. Keep a horse you bred at your yard through retirement if you want A Whole Life, rather than selling that horse before it reaches the required milestone.

Demo limits and the full game's timeline

The full game's unlimited days apply to your ongoing save, while individual horses still age and eventually retire. Keep that distinction in mind when moving on from a demo: continuing your yard does not mean keeping the same horses active indefinitely.
