How foals inherit their appearance

In Horses of Hoofprint Bay, foals inherit a mix of their parents’ coat coloring and white patterns, along with personality traits. Compare the mare and stallion’s visible features, then use the advanced breeding-station laboratory’s previews to explore possible foals.

02

Face markings and leopard patterns

Appearance features include face markings and Appaloosa patterns. The leopard-pattern system uses three separate layers to support snowcap blankets, spotted blankets, full-body leopard spots of various sizes, and snowflake leopard dots. These patterned appearances are shown in the horse creator and riding sequences.

Choose the overall appearance you like, then decide which markings matter most to your breeding goal. You might care most about the coat coloring, the white pattern, or how those features look together. Keeping that preference clear makes comparing potential parents more useful.

03

Compare parents and preview possible foals

Developing your buildings gives you access to an advanced breeding-station laboratory that can preview possible foals. Use those previews to help judge a pairing’s potential appearance. Treat the displayed foals as possibilities when deciding whether the pairing suits your plans.

  1. Inspect the intended mare’s visible coloring and white markings to establish the appearance you want to work from. Pick out the features you would most like to see reflected in her offspring.
  2. Compare the stallion’s visible coloring and markings with the mare’s. This gives you a pairing to evaluate for appearance without assigning an assumed chance to a particular coat outcome.
  3. Review the intended parents’ personality traits and performance characteristics to decide whether the pairing also fits your wider breeding goals. Even when looks are your priority, consider which other qualities matter to you.
  4. Preview possible foals in the advanced breeding-station laboratory when it is available. Use the displayed possibilities to decide whether you would enjoy the appearance the pairing could produce.

Customize tack, characters, and horse appearance

The built-in color-picking tools let you change your character’s appearance and tack colors. Horse appearance can also be customized through accessible textures and text files, including creating custom color palettes. For an inherited coat goal, use parent comparisons and possible-foal previews to plan your pairing.

05

Coat options across the demos and full game

The full game released on November 4, 2026. The October Demo added face markings and Appaloosa patterns after the February Demo, so older demo footage can show a different set of appearance options. If you want to carry your horses forward, October Demo saves are compatible with the full game; February Demo saves are not.
